OIE Veterinary Laboratory twinning on Brucellosis testing

The Zimbabwe Central Veterinary Laboratory (CVL) and the Italian Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise “G. Caporale” (IZSAM) are participating in an OIE Brucellosis Twinning project.

The main goal of the OIE Twinning project is to facilitate transfer of technical and professional expertise from the OIE International Reference Laboratory for Brucellosis diagnosis and control (IZSAM) to the Zimbabwean Central Veterinary Laboratory (CVL) in order to upgrade and improve CVL’s laboratory diagnostic and research capacities in both animal and human Brucellosis.

Successful implementation of the twinning project will also facilitate the possibility of the CVL to acquire World OIE reference status for Brucellosis. If granted the reference status, the CVL will be able provide international & regional (SADC) laboratory diagnostics and research support as well as coordinating inter-laboratory and proficiency testing schemes for Brucellosis to improve capacities of OIE member states.

The OIE aims to provide a more balanced geographical distribution of expertise through twinning projects. This enables more countries to access high quality diagnostic testing and technical knowledge within their own region, facilitating early disease detection and rapid control. Advanced scientific expertise will allow Zimbabwe and the continent to formulate science-based animal health control strategies and to maintain veterinary scientific communities to support the standard setting process of the OIE.
